01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Standing out inside the display case, the shop's sesame dango delightfully upends the usual expectation of sweet black sesame paste. Here, the deep richness of soy sauce and sugar clings to toasted black sesame seeds, punctuated by bits of walnut that introduce a pleasant, crunchy contrast. The skewered rice dumplings themselves boast substantial elasticity and a firm, satisfying chew, making each bite genuinely hearty.

Located in Ikegami, Ota Ward, Ōkuniya takes full advantage of this expressive mochi texture across a wide range of daily morning-made confections, known as asanamagashi. Offerings shift gracefully with the seasons, from triangular shio daifuku and mame daifuku wrapped around refined bean paste to spring sakura mochi, uguisu mochi, and refreshing ume daifuku timed to the blooming plum orchards. Come early summer, the sought-after mikan daifuku wraps an entire mandarin orange inside tender mochi, releasing a burst of juice with the first bite.

The assortment of baked sweets is equally dependable, featuring large oguri manju stuffed with whole chestnuts and dorayaki layered with thick, pillowy pancakes around bean paste. During hot weather, the counter turns to chilled, translucent treats such as kuzu zakura, water-cooled mizu manju, and cups of frozen confections, offering refreshing souvenirs for a neighbourhood stroll.

Doors open at 9:00, and because favoured skewers and seasonal specialties frequently sell out well before late afternoon, an early visit is recommended if you have a specific treat in mind. Payments are handled in cash.
